Shopping As the birthplace of Neiman Marcus and America's first planned shopping center, Dallas has some serious shopping credentials. So if you're into shopping, leave room in your luggage. You're going to need the extra space for your new wardrobe.
Some of Dallas' most popular shopping destinations include:
OAK LAWN
Known as the heart of Dallas’ gay community, the Oak Lawn neighborhood features an array of shops and boutiques that sell everything from watches and barware to home products and apparel.
HIGHLAND PARK VILLAGE
Historically noted as the first planned shopping center in America, Highland Park Village offers a variety of retail and service stores, restaurants and the first luxury suburban movie theater in Texas.
GALLERIA DALLAS
Modeled after the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in Italy, Galleria Dallas is a multilevel shopping mall, featuring the Westin Galleria, restaurants and more than 200 retail stores and specialty shops. Situated in the center of this newly renovated venue is a large ice skating rink that is open year-round.
NORTHPARK CENTER
When NorthPark Center opened in 1965, it was the largest climate-controlled retail establishment in the world. Today, a stroll through more than 2.3 million square feet of retail space will reveal everything from original paintings (what other shopping mall in America can boast of having original Warhols adorning the public spaces?) to 12-ton sculptures. From a 15 auditorium movie theater with stadium seating to luxury shopping, the entire complex still manages to surround CenterPark, a 1.4-acre landscaped garden.
MOCKINGBIRD STATION
Named for the DART Light Rail train station, this destination features shops carrying the latest in fashion and decorating trends. While at Mockingbird Station, grab a bite to eat from popular Texas-born cafés and restaurants. Afterward, you can catch an indie movie and a drink at the Angelika Film Center.
WEST VILLAGE
Located in the trendy Uptown neighborhood, West Village offers everything in a convenient five-block area. A bookstore and coffee shop offer a place to relax and unwind. Dinner and a movie makes for a great evening. And most importantly, the retail and boutique service shops make West Village a popular attraction.
BISHOP ARTS DISTRICT
One of Dallas’ best-kept secrets, the Bishop Arts District cleverly blends art and shopping in a quaint corner of the Oak Cliff neighborhood just southwest of downtown. Leaving commercialism and big store chains out of the loop, the Bishop Arts District offers regional character with more than 50 fine art galleries, specialty retail and clothing shops and world-class restaurants in this refurbished warehouse district.
